Today, OnS is pleased to announced the launch of new corporate branding and an entirely new web site. These initiatives reflect the acceleration in our work to commercialise our ground-breaking coating technologies.

“We are really delighted with the results of our re-branding project and with the new web site” explained CEO, Ian Russell. He continued “The new site does a truly excellent job of communicating the benefits of our technologies to potential customers across a range of applications and markets” he continued.

Abingdon (UK), 11 May 2020: Due to the continuing success in the research and development of its innovative coating technologies, Oxford nanoSystems (OnS) has today announced the appointment of Dr Ian Russell to the position of CEO.  Ian will report to the board of directors of OnS and, in addition to overall management responsibility, he will focus on developing and executing ONS’s commercial strategy. Ian will succeed Dr Alex Reip who will move into the role of Chief Technical Officer and will continue to lead OnS’s highly innovative research and development activities, in addition to overseeing the ramp up of production capabilities.

Ian has over 20 years’ experience managing early-stage business ventures in electronics, wearable technology, wireless communications, digital media, and software development. During this time, Ian has built and led international organisations covering product development, marketing, sales and service. Ian holds a B.Sc. in Electronic Engineering/Computer Science and a Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering, both from the University of Birmingham. Ian joined OnS in the role of Chief Business Development Officer in January 2020.

Alex, a founder of OnS, has led the development of the company’s technology since its formation in 2012. With an M.Sc. in Chemistry from The University of Reading, he also has a Materials Sciences Ph.D. from Brunel University and has recently become a fellow of the RSC. He has successfully grown the company over the past five years through engaging with customers, raising equity investment and winning multiple grants and awards.

Alex stated “This is a hugely significant step for OnS. Our nanoFLUX® and nanoPROTECT coatings are now proven and primed for commercial applications. I have been incredibly grateful for the opportunity over the last five years to lead OnS through the transition from a fledgling company to business with extremely compelling technology proposition and outstanding prospects in a number of very large markets. Adding Ian to the team will ensure we have the commercial experience and leadership needed to capitalise on the opportunities in front of us.”

On being appointed Ian commented: “I am thrilled to have been offered the opportunity to lead OnS at such an important time in its development. OnS has world leading technology, an exceptional team and a very exciting market opportunity. I am looking forward to building on our successful research and development, and to delivering the rapid growth that we anticipate.”

An idea that turned into a positive for Oxford Health, to share with you. Chief executive Dr. Alexander Reip explains: “We had recently scaled up our processes and required new protective equipment for our team, so our existing stock of protective suits became redundant. We realised they could be useful for the NHS so got in touch with Oxford Health and dropped them off.”

The full suits are reusable, resistant to chemicals and of course to pathogens. They are needed in patient care if staff are performing aerosol generating operations, for instance in dentistry.

We’ve been nominated for South East Tech 50!

Oxford nanoSystems Ltd has been shortlisted for a regional innovation award run by tech publication BusinessCloud.

OnS was among 118 tech firms nominated for potential inclusion in the South East Tech 50, a ranking of the region’s most innovative technology creators.

The general public can vote for the country’s most innovative smart technology company before 11pm on Wednesday 5th March by visiting this page.

An expert judging panel will also select their top companies from the shortlist, with the final 50 ranking decided by a combination of the judges’ choices and public vote.

The judging panel includes:

  • Tom Fox, tech growth lead, KPMG

Oxford nanoSystems named as one of 2019’s top innovators

Abingdon based Oxford nanoSystems has been announced as a finalist by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) for their 2019 Innovation Awards. The Awards celebrate the most pioneering engineering and technology innovations across 15 sectors, from energy and sustainability to transport and healthcare.

Chosen from over 360 entries, OnS was shortlisted for the Power & Energy award in recognition of the research and development of NanoFLUX, a surface coating technology that dramatically increases heat transfer within two-phase cooling systems. NanoFLUX technology is the solution for high performance and efficient cooling of high density electronic devices such as power amplifiers, advanced processors, GPU’s and laser diodes to run faster, at higher power levels and with higher reliability.

Dr Alex Reip, CEO, is delighted that OnS have been recognized for this award.

Panellist and IET Events Group Manager, Tanya Spencer, said: “The IET’s distinctive Innovation Awards celebrate the very best in new innovations in science, engineering and technology from around the world. Not only do the Awards put them in the spotlight, but play a crucial role in helping them advance their crucial work.

Awarded for the creative development and scale-up of novel nano-coatings for energy saving and generation in heat transfer.

Dr Alexander Reip is CEO of Oxford nanoSystems Ltd, a company developing innovative nanocoatings to improve two phase heat transfer with an aim to improve the energy efficiency and reducing CO2 in everyday systems including air conditioning and refrigeration, energy generation and electronics cooling. 

Alex came to the company at its foundation in 2012 as CSO. He spent three years developing the company’s innovative nanoFLUX® coating technology, including co-writing its core patent, before being appointed CEO in 2015.

Within this role he has grown the company to over 13 people. He has established relationships with major worldwide manufacturers within heat exchanger technologies, waste heat recovery and electronics-cooling markets, whilst remaining highly involved in the scientific development of the nanoFLUX® process, reducing deposition duration and reliance on market-controlled resource costs.

He started up the company’s placement schemes to give a years’ experience to chemistry and engineering undergraduates and mentors chemistry undergraduates and early stage entrepreneurs. He won the 2018 Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the Oxford Trust and an SME Leadership Award from the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2017

As well as being a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, he is part of the Institute of Directors “IoD 99” network of young entrepreneurs, member of the EPSRC Early Careers Forum and on the Science panel for the new DfE T-Levels.

Alex is thrilled to be the winner of this award.

The world needs and is demanding, new affordable, lightweight, robust and durable composite materials. This demand is being driven by the transportation and other high-value industries that want to improve performance, functionality and efficiency.

South Korea, the world’s 11th largest economy, is investing heavily to stimulate international collaboration in this field.
This October, Oxford nanoSystems together with 13 other advanced materials companies from across the UK will travel to South Korea as part of the next Global Business Innovation Programme (GBIP). The GBIP helps organisations to commercialise their technology by facilitating introductions to international partners interested in R&D and technology transfer collaboration opportunities or investment.

The companies will be supported through a structured and tailored programme of support before and after the visit. During the five day in-country programme they will meet South Korean officials and companies in Ulsan and Busan and attend ADEX Seoul 2019 with the aim of creating opportunities for technology collaboration.
