About Oxford nanoSystems

Founded in 2012, Oxford nanoSystems have spent eight years developing a ground-breaking coating technology which has shown substantial enhancements in heat transfer capabilities when applied to heat exchangers and other two-phase systems.

The goal of Oxford nanoSystems is to enable the production of higher value and more efficient products which consume less energy, limit environmental impact and reduce costs for consumers and manufacturers. The coatings have been independently assessed by world-leading thermal engineers at Brunel University and displayed heat transfer coefficient increases of over 524% compared to untreated surfaces.

Established by experienced academics and business professionals from the Oxford community, OnS is based at Blacklands Way, Abingdon Business Park, and has a vision to implement its coating technology onto components which have been fully manufactured onsite within existing production facilities, improving efficiencies, sizes and cost structures for those manufacturers.

An idea that turned into a positive for Oxford Health, to share with you. Chief executive Dr. Alexander Reip explains: “We had recently scaled up our processes and required new protective equipment for our team, so our existing stock of protective suits became redundant. We realised they could be useful for the NHS so got in touch with Oxford Health and dropped them off.”

The full suits are reusable, resistant to chemicals and of course to pathogens. They are needed in patient care if staff are performing aerosol generating operations, for instance in dentistry.

The world needs and is demanding, new affordable, lightweight, robust and durable composite materials. This demand is being driven by the transportation and other high-value industries that want to improve performance, functionality and efficiency.

South Korea, the world’s 11th largest economy, is investing heavily to stimulate international collaboration in this field.
This October, Oxford nanoSystems together with 13 other advanced materials companies from across the UK will travel to South Korea as part of the next Global Business Innovation Programme (GBIP). The GBIP helps organisations to commercialise their technology by facilitating introductions to international partners interested in R&D and technology transfer collaboration opportunities or investment.

The companies will be supported through a structured and tailored programme of support before and after the visit. During the five day in-country programme they will meet South Korean officials and companies in Ulsan and Busan and attend ADEX Seoul 2019 with the aim of creating opportunities for technology collaboration.

Judges’ comments:

The winner’s NanoFlux technology provides a completely new, scientific alternative for manufacturers to improve the efficiency of heat transfer surfaces. What stood out was their bringing together of scientific knowledge and technical knowhow to create an essential product – new or retrofit – that can respond to the carbon neutral challenge 2030/50.

Winners’ comments

“We are really thrilled and surprised to have won an award which had so many impressive finalists. The Thames Valley area is such a hub for innovative and interesting STEM companies. Climate change is at the forefront of people’s minds and this is one of the driving forces behind us developing nanoFLUX coating technology, which can significantly increase heat transfer. Persistence is a very large part of creating successful technology. You need to have an open mind to be able to see different applications for a given product even if things don’t always look like they are going to work.”

Dr Alex Reip, CEO, Oxford nanoSystems

Oxford nanoSystems are pleased to announce they have been shortlisted for the Barclays Award for Innovation, part of the Oxford Trust Enterprise Awards.. The Awards recognise and celebrate the breadth of innovative companies and individual entrepreneurs working in the science and technology industry in the Oxfordshire region today. They acknowledge the entrepreneurs and start-ups who are just starting out on their journey to success and commend established knowledge-intensive businesses that have made a positive impact on the regional economy. The Enterprise Awards have been running since 2005 and have previously showcased future high-growth companies such as Oxbotica, Immunocore, Oxford Nanopore and Adaptix.

The awards will be presented at a special reception after Venturefest, Oxford 2019 held at Oxford Brookes University on 11th September.

Steve Burgess, CEO of The Oxford Trust and one of the award judges, said: “There was a strong list of applicants for all the awards, which made it extremely difficult for the judges to shortlist for each category.”

“Our region creates some of the world’s leading tech businesses and it’s a real privilege to find out more about the next star companies and entrepreneurs coming through along with those organisations that are already starting to making a real difference.”

The Oxford Trust was established by Oxford’s first true entrepreneurs Sir Martin and Audrey (Lady) Wood in 1985, founders of Oxford Instruments – the first spin-out company from the University of Oxford. The Trust has been a part of, and supported, the local innovation ecosystem for the past thirty plus years. It was the Trust that helped establish Venturefest Oxford 20 years ago, started the Enterprise Awards in 2005, set up the region’s – and the UK’s – first innovation centre, and runs the Oxford Centre for Innovation and Wood Centre for Innovation to support start-up science and tech businesses. #EnterpriseAwards2019

OnS are very excited to announce that they have been chosen as finalists in not just one category, but four for the Thames Valley Tech Awards, organised by The Business Magazine. Innovative Tech Company, Tech Leadership Team, Emerging Tech Company and Science & Technology Award. Many thanks to the Judges for recognising our company as being successful in what we do #TVTA19. @thebusinessmag

OnS have developed nanoFLUX® coating technology which reduces the temperature a heating element needs to reach before the surrounding liquid boils. This reduction allows systems to be more efficient and therefore reduces overall energy consumption. The market applications for this extend in all areas of society from domestic uses in air conditioning and refrigeration to larger industrial including waste energy recovery and energy generation to fast growing markets such as data centre cooling and high-performance electronics.

The Award evening will be a glittering black-tie dinner held at the Royal Berkshire Conference Centre at the Madejski Stadium in Reading on Thursday, September 19, 2019.  Good Luck OnS!
